TLDR The research found that twisting hair fibers can show changes in stiffness and damage, and help tell apart different hair treatments.
The study "Quasi-Static Torsional Deformation of Single Hair Fibers: Application of a Modeling Approach and Results from Cosmetic Treatments" from 2019 focused on the torsional properties of single hair fibers, an area that had received less attention compared to tensile deformation. The researchers found that torsional measurements could provide insights into changes in shear stiffness associated with cuticle damage and could differentiate between cosmetic treatments where other deformation modes could not. They applied a core/shell modeling approach to isolate the potential contributions of the cuticles and the cortex on the fiber torsional modulus and to study the effect of relative humidity on hair fiber structural components.
