Strengthening hair with Centella asiatica: a report of clinical and subjective efficacy of a local treatment with a 0.5% hair lotion

In 2018, a study involving 30 volunteers with telogen effluvium or mild to moderate alopecia tested the efficacy of a 0.5% Centella asiatica extract lotion (Centerox®) over 4-8 weeks. The treatment group experienced a 41% reduction in hair loss during wash tests and a statistically significant increase in hair strength in pull tests, compared to a placebo. Additionally, an in vitro component of the study showed a 33% increase in laminin-5 expression, which supports hair growth. The lotion did not significantly change hair diameter but was well tolerated with no adverse effects reported. Participants also subjectively appreciated the treatment, indicating overall satisfaction with the product's performance.
