TLDR Timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing skin infections in wildlife.
The study documents a case of generalized dermatitis in a European bison calf caused by Staphylococcus aureus, resulting in severe hair loss and scabs. Despite initial treatment failures, laboratory tests confirmed the bacterial infection, and targeted treatment with amoxicillin, vitamins, chlorhexidine, and zinc supplements led to full recovery over nearly 3 months. This case highlights the importance of thorough clinical workups, appropriate sample collection, and targeted antibiotic use to prevent antibiotic resistance and effectively manage skin diseases in wild animals, which is crucial for conserving the vulnerable European bison population.
