TLDR Timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing skin infections in wildlife.
This case study of a European bison calf with generalized staphylococcal dermatitis underscores the importance of accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment in wildlife. The calf, Bebsi, exhibited severe hair loss and scabs due to infections by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Initial treatment with ivermectin was ineffective, but subsequent use of amoxicillin led to healing and hair regrowth over 45 days. The study highlights the need for laboratory testing and timely intervention to prevent chronic conditions and emphasizes collaboration with veterinary specialists for the health of vulnerable species like the European bison.
