TLDR Spironolactone was effective in reducing hair growth in women with hirsutism.
In a study conducted 37 years ago, 18 women with hirsutism were treated with 100 mg of Spironolactone daily. The severity of hirsutism was evaluated using the Ferriman and Gallwey scale, and various hormone levels were measured before and after six months of treatment. The study found that 12 of the women showed a clinical response, with the total hirsutism score for the entire group decreasing from 14.1 +/- 6.3 to 11.8 +/- 6.4 (p less than 0.01). No changes were observed in the hormonal values. The results confirmed the effectiveness of Spironolactone in reducing hair growth, primarily through a peripheral mode of action.
