TLDR Low-level laser therapy effectively reduces the size of pressure ulcers compared to placebo.
In a 2018 study, the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the healing of pressure ulcers were examined in a prospective, randomized, controlled trial involving ten patients. The patients received either LLLT or placebo therapy three times a week for 10 weeks. The study found that the group treated with LLLT had a significant reduction in the unhealed area of the ulcer, with only 24.4% of the initial ulcer area remaining unhealed compared to 84.7% in the placebo group (P = 0.0008). Additionally, the decrease in ulcer area from baseline was 193.0 mm² in the LLLT group versus 14.7 mm² in the placebo group (P = 0.0002). There were no adverse effects reported, and the study concluded that LLLT was an effective treatment for bedsores that were resistant to conventional medical management, suggesting that this therapy could improve the quality of life for elderly patients with pressure ulcers.
