TLDR Malnutrition causes skin changes due to nutrient deficiencies.
The document reviewed the skin signs associated with nutritional disorders, particularly in children and infants who require adequate nutrients for growth. Malnutrition, resulting from deficiencies in protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, led to various clinical and metabolic changes, including mucocutaneous manifestations. Specific nutrient deficiencies, such as zinc deficiency, could cause periorificial glazed erythema and hair loss, but similar symptoms might also appear in deficiencies of essential fatty acids, biotinidase, and in conditions like kwashiorkor. The overlap of skin manifestations made it challenging to distinguish between different nutrient deficiencies.
