TLDR Most end-stage renal disease patients in Jordan have skin issues like dryness and itching.
The study conducted at Prince Hamza Hospital in Jordan evaluated skin manifestations in 77 end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis. It found that 83.1% of participants experienced skin conditions, with generalized xerosis (63.6%) and pruritus (36.4%) being the most common. Additionally, 22.1% experienced diffuse scalp hair loss. The study emphasizes the importance of early recognition and management of these dermatological issues to reduce the physical and psychological burden on ESRD patients, and suggests further research into underlying mechanisms and treatments. Key risk factors include prolonged diabetes, hypocalcemia, and reduced serum iron.
