TLDR Guidelines for full-body skin exams, including hidden areas, are needed to guide doctors and inform patients.
The study surveyed 706 international dermatologists to explore their practices and attitudes towards full-body skin examinations (FSE), particularly focusing on concealed sites such as the scalp, breasts, oral mucosa, and anogenitalia. It found that international dermatologists are more likely than their Australian counterparts to examine these concealed sites, with patient concern being a significant factor influencing this practice. Barriers to examining these areas include patient embarrassment and time constraints for clinicians. The study calls for a consensus approach to FSE and concealed site examination (CSE) to guide clinicians, manage patient expectations, and improve early detection of skin malignancies, while also addressing potential medico-legal issues.
