TLDR Shiunko ointment may help prevent scalp dermatitis during radiotherapy but doesn't stop hair loss.
This preliminary study investigated the prophylactic use of shiunko, an oriental ointment, in preventing radiation-induced scalp dermatitis in 10 patients with malignant brain tumors undergoing radiotherapy. The patients, aged 21 to 79, received radiation doses ranging from 45 to 60 Gy. Shiunko was applied throughout the radiotherapy period, and results showed favorable therapeutic effects, with all patients maintaining good scalp conditions and experiencing only Grade 1 radiation dermatitis. However, hair loss was not prevented. Shiunko, composed of natural ingredients like lithospermi radix and sesame oil, demonstrated unique properties such as anti-bacterial and wound healing activities, suggesting its potential effectiveness in preventing radiation-induced scalp dermatitis.
