TLDR Dermatologists should learn more about shampoos to better treat hair and scalp issues.
Modern shampoos have evolved beyond simple cleansing agents to meet increasing demands for milder and more environmentally friendly products. Traditional soaps are not ideal for hair cleansing as they can leave a residue when combined with hard water. There are various types of shampoos available, including those that address specific hair issues with additional ingredients. While dermatologists often prescribe shampoos, medical schools provide limited education on hair cosmetics, leading to prescriptions that focus on scalp treatment without considering hair fiber health. It is crucial for dermatologists to understand the mechanisms of shampoos, the different surfactants used, and how to select the appropriate shampoo for different conditions.
