TLDR Severe iron deficiency lowers fertility in female rats.
This study investigated the impact of severe iron deficiency on conception rates in female rats. Two groups of female rats (n = 15 each) were used: one fed a low iron diet and the other a normal diet. The iron-deficient rats exhibited symptoms such as white skin and eyes, hair loss, and weight loss, along with significantly lower hemoglobin levels and red blood cell counts. The results showed a significantly lower conception rate in the iron-deficient group, along with disruptions in estrus and delays in conception. The study concluded that severe iron deficiency significantly affected fertility and could be a factor in unexplained infertility, suggesting the need for further research on iron's role in conception.
