TLDR Hypoalbuminemia can cause pleural effusion and needs careful treatment.
This case report discusses a 30-year-old female patient with severe hypoalbuminemia, pulmonary edema, and pleural effusion, who also exhibited symptoms consistent with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The patient presented with shortness of breath, hair loss, and other systemic symptoms. Diagnostic imaging revealed cardiomegaly, pulmonary edema, and bilateral pleural effusion. Treatment included oxygen therapy, intravenous albumin, medications, and a high-protein diet, which led to improved albumin levels after three days. The report highlights that hypoalbuminemia can lead to pleural effusion by reducing oncotic pressure, and in SLE, it may be due to inflammation, malnutrition, or protein loss. Management focuses on addressing underlying causes, providing nutritional support, and administering albumin carefully.
