TLDR People with severe Alopecia Areata have higher levels of TGF-β1, which may play a role in the condition.
The study conducted by Doaa El-Habak, Rana Khashaba, and Reham Abd elmageed in 2020 involved 60 patients with Alopecia Areata (AA), aged between 5 and 50 years, and 25 healthy control subjects. The researchers aimed to evaluate the serum levels of Transforming Growth Factor Beta1 (TGF-β1) in these patients and correlate its level with the severity of the disease. The results showed a significant difference in the mean serum TGF-β1 level between the patients and the controls. The TGF-β1 level was higher in severe AA patients compared to moderate and mild cases. Additionally, the TGF-β1 level was higher in AA patients who had the disease for more than one month compared to those with a disease duration of one month or less. The study concluded that high levels of TGF-β1 are present in patients with AA and positively correlate with the disease's severity, suggesting a potential causal role of TGF-β1 in the pathogenesis of AA.
