TLDR Low serum ferritin levels are linked to hair loss in women.
This case control study conducted at Khyber Teaching Hospital in Peshawar, Pakistan, from June 2017 to May 2018, investigated the relationship between serum ferritin levels and telogen effluvium (TE) in 100 female participants, divided into 50 patients with TE and 50 healthy controls. The study found that the mean serum ferritin level was significantly lower in patients with TE (47.54±19.85 ng/ml) compared to healthy controls (72.13±5.40 ng/ml), with a p-value of 0.00 indicating a statistically significant difference. Additionally, the mean hemoglobin level and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were also significantly lower in the patient group. The study concluded that low serum ferritin levels were associated with telogen effluvium in female patients.
