Role of Serum Androgens and Prostate-Specific Antigen Levels in Men with Androgenetic Alopecia

Hesham N Khaled, Azza M Abdu Allah, Ahmad A Abdelhameed, Wafaa Ahmed Shehata
TLDR Higher testosterone and DHT levels are linked to hair loss in men, but not to prostate cancer risk.
The study compared 40 men with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) to 40 healthy controls and found that serum levels of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) were higher in AGA patients, suggesting that androgens played a significant role in AGA development. There was no significant difference in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels between the groups, indicating no association between AGA and prostate cancer risk. The study also noted differences in androgen levels between frontal and vertical AGA, emphasizing the need for further research to explore these relationships and develop targeted treatments.

community Androgenetic alopecia is a skin disease: DHT-mediated skin disorders

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) impacts various skin conditions, including Androgenetic alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis, by causing overactivity in sebaceous glands. Topical medications Tacrolimus and Clobetasol can reduce these inflammatory conditions, and treatments like RU58841, Minoxidil, and Finasteride may also be beneficial.

Finasteride and dutasteride can improve skin texture and reduce acne by lowering DHT but do not reverse aging. They may enhance skin and hair health for some, but can also cause side effects like dry skin and sexual dysfunction.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
