TLDR Keratin filaments' elasticity is influenced by their terminal domains and surrounding medium.
The study used self-consistent field theory to model interactions between keratin intermediate filaments, focusing on the roles of N and C terminal domains. It found that these domains could mediate weak attraction between filaments through bridging and electrostatics, which disappeared with deviations from charge compensation or the addition of small ions and amino acids. The research compared two models, PG and AA, revealing differences in domain behavior and charge interactions. The presence of natural moisturizing factors increased repulsion between filaments, suggesting their importance in maintaining skin elasticity. Overall, the study provided insights into the molecular interactions of keratin filaments, highlighting the influence of terminal domains and medium composition on skin properties.
