The document described a case of selenium toxicity, known as selenosis, caused by the consumption of over-the-counter liquid nutritional supplements, Total Body Formula and Total Body Mega Formula. In March 2008, the FDA received reports of adverse reactions linked to these products, which led to a voluntary recall. Subsequent analysis by the FDA in May 2008 revealed that the supplements contained substantially elevated levels of selenium and modestly elevated levels of chromium. This case highlighted the potential dangers of excessive selenium intake from dietary supplements.
