TLDR Excessive selenium from supplements can be harmful.
In 2008, the FDA reported cases of selenium toxicity, known as selenosis, linked to over-the-counter liquid nutritional supplements, Total Body Formula and Total Body Mega Formula. These products, distributed by Total Body Essential Nutrition, contained significantly elevated levels of selenium and slightly elevated chromium levels. A voluntary recall was initiated following these findings. This case highlighted the potential for substantial toxicity from excessive selenium consumption, despite its essential role in normal physiological functions.
