TLDR Dutasteride improved hair density and thickness in men not helped by finasteride, with minimal side effects.
In a 2016 study, researchers found that dutasteride was effective in treating men with androgenic alopecia who did not see improvements with finasteride. Out of 23 non-responders to finasteride, 16 were given dutasteride (0.5 mg/day) and after six months, 9 (56.25%) experienced significant improvements in hair density and thickness. Side effects were minimal, with only two patients experiencing transient erectile dysfunction and one patient having both erectile dysfunction and a slight depressive episode. The study suggested that dutasteride, which inhibits both type I and II 5-alpha reductase enzymes, could serve as an alternative treatment for androgenic alopecia, especially for those who do not benefit from finasteride.
