TLDR Ethanol embolization and debridement successfully treated a scalp AVM, stopped bleeding, and restored hair growth.
An 18-year-old male with a scalp arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and associated ulcerative hemorrhages and localized alopecia underwent successful treatment involving ethanol embolization and restrictive debridement over 18 months. This approach not only eliminated the AVM lesion but also restored hair growth around the affected area. The recovery of hair growth is attributed to the alleviation of the AVM steal phenomenon, which restored normal blood supply to the superficial layers, promoting healing and hair regrowth. The study suggests that ethanol embolization can be effective in treating AVM-related alopecia and that careful debridement is feasible for ulcerated AVMs with a high risk of hemorrhage.
