TLDR Amitraz effectively treated sarcoptic mange in three alpacas.
In 2007, a study reported the successful treatment of sarcoptic mange in three alpacas using a topical solution of amitraz. These alpacas had not improved with previous treatments using eprinomectin and doramectin and exhibited symptoms such as severe itching, alopecia, erythema, scaling, crusting, and weight loss. The treatment involved eight weekly applications of amitraz (50 mL in 10 L) after prewashing with antibacterial or keratolytic shampoos. The alpacas showed complete resolution of symptoms with no recurrence over a 10-month follow-up, suggesting that amitraz is an effective and well-tolerated option for treating sarcoptic mange in alpacas when other medications fail.
