TLDR Baricitinib therapy helped many patients with severe alopecia regrow hair after 52 weeks.
The study "Distribution of SALT scores by Therapeutic Response in Patients with Severe Alopecia After 52 weeks of Baricitinib Therapy" involved 1200 adults with severe alopecia, who were randomized to receive either a placebo (N=345), baricitinib 2 mg (N=340), or baricitinib 4 mg (N=515) for 52 weeks. The results showed that 24.1% of patients who received baricitinib 2 mg and 41.6% of patients who received baricitinib 4 mg had a Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score ≤20, indicating significant hair regrowth. Additionally, 17.9% of patients on baricitinib 2 mg and 18.8% of patients on baricitinib 4 mg achieved SALT scores of 21-49, indicating partial hair regrowth. The study concluded that while a significant proportion of patients achieved substantial hair regrowth, even those who did not meet the clinical response criteria of SALT ≤20 showed some improvement, suggesting that a longer treatment course may be necessary for optimal outcomes.
