TLDR Pneumatic compression can cause skin bruising even in healthy individuals.
The case report detailed a 49-year-old woman who developed the Rumpel-Leede phenomenon, marked by non-blanchable purpuric macules, after using a pneumatic compression device for venous thromboembolism prophylaxis post-spinal surgery. Despite no underlying medical conditions, capillary rupture occurred due to increased intracapillary pressure and endothelial dysfunction from sepsis. The condition resolved on its own after stopping the device. This was the first documented case linked to pneumatic compression, emphasizing the need to recognize the phenomenon to prevent unnecessary interventions, as it usually resolves without specific treatment.
