TLDR Weight loss and low folic acid levels after sleeve gastrectomy can predict hair loss severity.
In a retrospective case-control study of 54 obese patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) at the East Hospital of Tongji University from November 2013 to June 2015, it was found that postoperative excess weight loss (EWL) and folic acid levels were independent factors affecting the severity of hair loss after the surgery. All patients were followed for 15 months, with 42 experiencing hair loss to varying degrees. Univariate analysis showed that gender, postoperative EWL, and folic acid levels were significant factors, while multivariate analysis confirmed that postoperative EWL and folic acid levels were independent predictors of hair loss severity. Despite treatments for hair loss, including oral medications, there was no obvious improvement, but hair loss ceased and new hair growth occurred over time. The prediction accuracy for the severity of hair loss after LSG was 85.2%.
