TLDR The UK published guidelines recommending that only qualified medical professionals should perform cosmetic procedures, with the possibility of these guidelines influencing future laws.
In 2013, two significant documents were published in the UK concerning regulations and standards in cosmetic/aesthetic medicine and surgery, including hair transplant surgery. The first, the Royal College of Surgeons of England’s Professional Standards for Cosmetic Practice, outlined principles for all doctors in the field of cosmetic practice, recommending that only licensed doctors, registered dentists, and registered nurses should provide any cosmetic treatments, and invasive procedures should only be carried out by licensed doctors on the General Medical Council’s specialist register for surgical specialties. The second document, the Review of the Regulations of Cosmetic Interventions by the Department of Health, made 40 recommendations covering high-quality care, an informed and empowered public, and accessible redress and resolution. These documents were not legally binding, but could potentially become part of government legislation.
