TLDR Girls in Alcalá have higher hair calcium and strontium levels than boys, with lower overall levels than other regions.
The study aimed to establish tentative reference ranges for calcium (Ca) and strontium (Sr) in the scalp hair of 120 healthy children aged 6 to 9 years in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. The analysis revealed that girls had significantly higher levels of both metals in their hair compared to boys. The proposed reference ranges for Ca and Sr in Alcalá were lower than those reported for children in other Spanish regions and countries like Korea and Italy. The findings suggest that children in Alcalá may have lower exposure to these elements from environmental or dietary sources. However, due to the lack of standardized methods for calculating reference ranges, these intervals should only be applied to children in the Madrid Region.
