TLDR Diffuse hair loss significantly worsens quality of life for females, especially younger women and those with long-term hair loss.
The study conducted at Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College and Hospital in Tamil Nadu, India, assessed the impact of diffuse hair loss on the quality of life (QoL) among 100 female patients using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). The most common condition was Acute Telogen Effluvium (ATE) in 52 patients, followed by Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) in 30 patients, and Chronic Telogen Effluvium (CTE) in 18 patients. The majority of participants were aged 18-39 years, with a mean age of 35.36 years. The study found that 92% of females experienced a moderate to severe impact on their QoL. The DLQI scores were significantly higher in FPHL and ATE compared to CTE, and higher scores were observed in younger women (18-29 years) and those with hair loss lasting more than one year. The study concluded that diffuse hair loss in females significantly affected their QoL, with strong associations between DLQI scores and age, duration, and type of hair loss.
