TLDR PRX102 is essential for rice root hair growth by helping transport substances to the tips.
The study identifies PRX102, a Class III peroxidase, as crucial for root hair tip growth in rice. PRX102 localizes at the tips of root hairs, and its knockout mutant (prx102) exhibits shorter and thicker root hairs with reduced dense cytoplasm at the tips. RNA-seq analysis revealed 87 downregulated genes in prx102, including those involved in glutathione metabolism. The findings suggest that PRX102 regulates dense cytoplasmic streaming towards the root hair tips, essential for proper root hair development, without significantly altering the ROS pool.
