TLDR Finasteride helps reduce lung inflammation and damage after trauma and infection.
The study investigated the effects of finasteride on the pulmonary immune response in a combined model of trauma-hemorrhage and polymicrobial sepsis in mice. The results showed that finasteride reduced the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines from alveolar macrophages and decreased their levels in lung tissue. Finasteride also increased systemic estradiol levels. The study suggests that finasteride may have beneficial effects on remote organ damage after trauma and sepsis by decreasing pro-inflammatory mediators and thereby initiating or maintaining pulmonary injury. However, additional studies are needed to further clarify the potential role of finasteride in the treatment of posttraumatic immune disturbances in the clinical setting.
