TLDR Complete removal of scalp tumors is crucial, but malignant cases may recur or metastasize, requiring a multidisciplinary approach and close follow-up.
The study reported on six cases of proliferating trichilemmal tumors of the scalp, a rare and mostly benign neoplasm derived from the hair follicle's outer sheath. These tumors, which can be benign or malignant, often require complex surgical management due to their potential for local invasion and recurrence. The study, conducted over 8 years, involved a multidisciplinary team approach for treatment, achieving total removal in all patients. Two patients with malignant tumors received adjuvant chemotherapy, and one died from metastatic disease. The study highlighted the importance of complete resection and careful reconstruction of scalp defects, using techniques such as local tissue rearrangement and free vascularized flaps, to optimize patient outcomes and facilitate timely adjuvant therapy.
