TLDR Barrier protection and specialty surfaces help prevent skin breakdown in pediatric intensive care.
The dissertation explored the prevention of skin breakdown in pediatric intensive care units, emphasizing the distinction between skin breakdown and pressure ulcers. It highlighted the severe consequences of skin breakdown, such as increased treatment costs, infection risks, and psychological effects like alopecia or scarring. The study examined the effectiveness of barrier protection (using zinc oxide, petrolatum, and alcohol-free films) and specialty surfaces in preventing skin breakdown. These methods aimed to distribute pressure, reduce moisture, and control temperature, ultimately reducing morbidity, length of hospital stay, and healthcare costs. The research was guided by a PICO format question to determine the more effective prevention method between barrier protection and specialty surfaces.
