TLDR Most diabetic patients have skin problems, which are more common with longer diabetes duration and poor blood sugar control.
The study conducted at Rassoul Akram Hospital in Tehran, Iran, with 255 diabetic patients, found that 88.4% had at least one skin condition and 15.7% had nail manifestations related to diabetes mellitus (DM). Certain skin conditions were significantly associated with the patient's age, duration of DM, fasting blood sugar levels, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). The research highlighted the high prevalence of dermatologic manifestations in diabetic patients and the importance of recognizing these conditions for early DM detection and treatment. It also noted that skin manifestations could indicate the patient's metabolic control and that dermatologists play a crucial role in early DM detection. The study referenced another research by Shahzad et al. on 320 diabetic patients, which showed a higher prevalence of cutaneous manifestations in patients with a longer duration of DM. The study aimed to raise awareness among healthcare professionals about the skin and nail manifestations of DM to aid in better management of the disease.
