TLDR Berberine and curcumin may help reduce obesity by improving gut bacteria and liver health.
The study examined the effects of berberine and curcumin on obesity in genetically obese mice, focusing on gut microbiota and liver health. Over 4 weeks, 36 mice were divided into groups receiving different treatments. Berberine supplementation led to reduced body weight gain, decreased food intake, and lower plasma triglycerides, while both berberine and curcumin increased beneficial gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia. These changes were linked to improved metabolic parameters, reduced hepatic inflammation, and oxidative stress. The findings suggested that berberine and curcumin could modulate gut microbiota and potentially aid in managing obesity, though further research in humans was recommended.
