TLDR Some skin conditions in pets can signal cancer or may develop into cancer, and monitoring or treating these can help detect or manage the disease.
This chapter detailed the definitions, causes, medical history, clinical features, differential diagnosis, and treatments of pre- and paraneoplastic syndromes in small animals. Preneoplastic dermatoses, which have a malignant predisposition, and paraneoplastic dermatoses, resulting from the metabolic effects of internal malignancy, were discussed. In dogs, preneoplastic conditions included actinic keratoses and cutaneous lymphocytosis, while paraneoplastic conditions included cutaneous amyloidosis and paraneoplastic pemphigus. In cats, preneoplastic conditions included actinic keratoses, and paraneoplastic conditions included pancreatic/hepatic paraneoplastic alopecia. Regular monitoring of preneoplastic dermatoses was emphasized for early cancer detection, and treating the underlying cause of paraneoplastic dermatoses was necessary to prevent symptom recurrence.
