Polycystic Ovaries Are Inherited as an Autosomal Dominant Trait: Analysis of 29 Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and 10 Control Families

This study aimed to investigate the genetic basis of polycystic ovaries (PCO) and premature male pattern baldness (PMPB) by examining first-degree relatives of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and comparing them to relatives of asymptomatic control volunteers. The study involved 29 families of women with PCOS and 10 control families. Researchers used clinical, ultrasound, and biochemical parameters to define PCO/PCOS and assessed male relatives for early onset male pattern baldness. The findings suggested that PCO and PMPB were inherited as autosomal dominant traits, indicating a genetic component to these conditions.
