TLDR Certain plants may help hair growth in alopecia.
This scoping review examines the use of plant species for hair growth in the context of alopecia, a condition characterized by patchy hair loss. The review synthesized evidence from 175 studies, primarily using animal models such as mice, rats, and rabbits, to evaluate the hair growth activity of natural plant substances. A total of 152 plant species and 37 isolated substances were identified, with methodologies including hair growth analysis, histological analysis, and gene expression analysis. Minoxidil and finasteride were frequently used as positive controls. The review highlights the creation of a checklist to improve data comparison, reproducibility, and evidence quality, aiming to aid future research and advancements in hair growth studies.

A study that outlines the full model for androgenic alopecia (AGA) which links DHT to cellular senescence in dermal papilla cells, and suggests black chokeberry as a source of cyanidin 3-O-arabinoside polyphenol with potential anti-oxidant properties that could reverse this process. The post encourages reaching out to experts in anti-aging and longevity to research treatments involving the polyphenol.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
