TLDR A woman developed a hair disorder after a bone marrow transplant, which improved with treatment.
In 2019, a case study was reported of a 67-year-old woman with multiple myeloma who developed Pityriasis amiantacea (PA), a hair disorder characterized by matting of multiple hair shafts, following a bone marrow transplant with melphalan conditioning. The patient noticed changes in scalp hair regrowth 4 weeks after the transplant and developed multiple PA lesions over the next 4 months. These lesions responded rapidly to treatment, which included mineral oil under occlusion in the evening followed by daily shampooing with alternating coal tar, salicylic acid, and ketoconazole shampoos. The study suggested that the patient's PA was associated with either the melphalan conditioning, the bone marrow transplant, or both.
