TLDR The quality of Neelibhringadi Keratailam varies among products, suggesting a need for better standardization and quality control.
The study assessed the quality of Neelibhringadi Keratailam, an Ayurvedic hair oil, by comparing its physicochemical properties in samples from certified Ayurvedic companies in Kerala to a sample prepared in an Ayurvedic college. The market samples varied in acid value, iodine value, refractive index, saponification value, specific gravity, color, and consistency compared to the prepared sample. Lead content, analyzed due to the inclusion of Anjana (lead sulphide) in the formulation, also showed variations, with some samples within WHO limits and others higher. Microbial contamination was absent in all market samples. The study found significant differences in the physicochemical properties between the prepared and market samples, indicating a need for improved standardization and quality control in the manufacturing of this Ayurvedic product.
