TLDR Hair restoration surgery can be safely done without major bleeding in patients on antithrombotic therapy, and these drugs shouldn't be stopped before surgery.
The 2012 document provided guidelines for managing antithrombotic therapy in hair restoration surgery for patients with coronary heart disease, mechanical heart valve, and atrial fibrillation. The study involved 25 male patients who underwent 46 hair transplant operations. It concluded that hair restoration surgery can be performed safely without major bleeding in patients under antithrombotic therapy, and these drugs should not be stopped before surgery. The document also provided specific guidelines for patients with bare metal stents, drug eluting stents, and atrial fibrillation. It introduced dabigatran, a new oral anticoagulant drug, and suggested its dosage be reduced to avoid bleeding complications in patients over 70 or with impaired renal function. The document emphasized that anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs should be continued before surgery in high-risk patients.
