TLDR Hair wrapped tightly around a boy's penis can cause serious damage if not treated quickly.
In 2019, a study was conducted on a 4-year-old boy who suffered from Penile Hair Tourniquet Syndrome (HTS), a rare but serious condition characterized by a hair coiled around the penis, causing pathologies ranging from glandular swelling to necrosis and amputation. The boy had been experiencing swelling on his penis for two months, and despite treatment with antibiotics, his condition worsened. The hair coil was not visible due to severe edema. The boy was taken to the operating room where the hair coil was found and removed under general anesthesia. The patient responded well to treatment and showed complete recovery after a month. The study concluded that Penile HTS, while rare, can cause severe deformities and should be considered a surgical emergency. Early diagnosis and rapid treatment can prevent serious complications. The condition is most commonly found in boys between 0 and 6 years of age and almost exclusively in circumcised boys.
