TLDR PCOS is more common in Nicaraguan women than globally.
A study conducted at the Medical Clinic of the American University in Nicaragua assessed the prevalence of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) among 56 women of reproductive age. The study found that 30.4% of the participants were diagnosed with PCOS based on clinical criteria and ultrasound findings, which is significantly higher than the international prevalence rates of 8-13%. The study highlighted that 23.2% of the women exhibited androgenic alopecia, and 41.1% showed evidence of PCOS through pelvic ultrasound. The findings suggest a higher prevalence of PCOS in the studied population, particularly among Hispanic women, and emphasize the underdiagnosis of the condition globally.
