TLDR Patients using social media have mixed feelings about alopecia treatments, noting hair growth but also frustration with treatment recurrence.
The study analyzed social media posts using artificial intelligence to gauge patient perspectives on alopecia areata treatments. From 688,992 AA-related posts, 23,342 were about treatment, with 5,172 discussing minoxidil. Of those, 1,793 posts indicated hair growth but also expressed "disgust," likely due to alopecia areata recurrence after ceasing treatment. The findings highlighted a discrepancy between the Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) and emotional responses, indicating a need for further research to understand the emotional impact of treatment outcomes. This could assist healthcare providers and pharmaceutical companies in better meeting patient needs.
