TLDR Finasteride significantly reduced tics and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in patients with Tourette syndrome.
The document reports on a study involving 10 patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) that examined the effects of finasteride on reducing tics and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The study found that finasteride significantly reduced the severity of global symptoms, total tics, motor tics, and phonic tics, with p-values less than .0001, according to the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS). For the 6 patients with obsessive-compulsive symptoms, there was a significant reduction in total scores and compulsion subscale scores on the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), with p-values of .028, but no significant reduction in obsession subscale scores (p = .068). The findings suggest finasteride may be a promising treatment for TS, indicating the need for future controlled studies.
