TLDR Finasteride (Propecia) may cause depression and suicidal thoughts; stop use and inform a healthcare professional if symptoms develop.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a Drug Safety Update warning that patients receiving finasteride 1mg for male pattern hair loss (Propecia) may be at risk of depression and suicidal thoughts. The MHRA has received reports of depressive illness in patients receiving Propecia, and some reports of suicidal thoughts, in men with and without a previous history of depression. The product information for both Propecia and Proscar will be updated to reflect this risk, and patients should be advised to stop finasteride immediately if they develop depression and inform a healthcare professional.
