TLDR There is no significant link between alopecia areata and the PON1 enzyme polymorphisms studied.
The study investigated the relationship between paraoxonase-1 (PON1) enzyme polymorphisms (PON1 R192Q and PON1 L55M) and alopecia areata (AA) in 119 AA patients and 104 healthy controls. It found no significant differences in the frequencies of these polymorphisms between the two groups, and although the PON 55 L allele was more frequent in AA patients, it was not significantly related to AA. The study concluded that there was no significant association between AA and the PON1 polymorphisms studied, noting limitations such as not measuring enzyme activity and a small sample size, and recommended further research with larger populations.
