TLDR Ovariectomized mice mimic postmenopausal hair loss, and estradiol helps maintain hair density.
The study found that ovariectomized mice can be used as a model for postmenopausal female pattern hair loss (FPHL). The researchers observed hair loss and an increase in kenogen hair follicles in the mice, which is similar to what is seen in FPHL patients. The study also found that estradiol supplementation can cancel out the effect of ovariectomy on hair follicles and maintain hair density in the mice. However, the study acknowledges that there are limitations to using mice as a model for FPHL and that the findings only apply to postmenopausal onset FPHL.
