TLDR Spearmint tea may help reduce testosterone levels in women with PCOS, but longer studies are needed to confirm its effect on hirsutism.
A study conducted in Turkey investigated the effects of spearmint tea on hirsutism in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) over a 30-day period. Involving 42 participants, the randomized controlled trial found that spearmint tea significantly reduced free and total testosterone levels and increased LH and FSH levels. Participants reported a subjective improvement in hirsutism using the modified Dermatology Quality of Life Index (DQLI), but there was no significant change in the objective Ferriman-Galwey score. The study concluded that while spearmint tea demonstrated antiandrogen properties, the short duration of the study was insufficient to observe significant clinical improvements in hirsutism, suggesting the need for longer studies to fully assess its potential as a natural treatment.
