TLDR Most men's multi-hair follicles naturally stand perpendicular to a line from the top of their head, which is important for natural-looking hair transplants.
The study conducted on 100 nonbald men found that the majority of multi-hair follicles were naturally oriented perpendicular to the radial line from the crown swirl, with 49-79% in the peripheral and middle scalp areas and a decrease to 38-49% in the vertex area. This orientation was consistent regardless of the direction of the crown swirl (clockwise or counterclockwise). The findings suggest that for hair transplantation, grafts should be placed perpendicularly to mimic natural hair orientation, particularly in the front half of the scalp. The study also noted that multi-hair follicles are parallel to the incision line in the donor area, reducing transection during harvesting. Further research is recommended to explore hair follicle characteristics in women and the impact of graft orientation on perceived hair density.
