TLDR Enhancing Factor is found in growing tissues like young mouse intestines and skin but not in adults.
The study investigated the ontogeny of Enhancing Factor (EF), a 14 kDa protein from mouse intestines that enhances the binding of 125I-EGF to A431 cells, suggesting its role as a modulator of EGF. In adult mice, EF was predominantly found in the Paneth cells of the small intestines, with lesser presence in the stomach and colon. The appearance of EF coincided with the maturation of Paneth cells. In newborn mouse skin, EF was localized in hair follicles during the first hair cycle from day 2 to day 8 but was absent in adult skin, indicating its association with tissues exhibiting high growth rates.
