TLDR Hair cortisol levels can indicate chronic stress in children, with differences seen between races.
The study aimed to establish normative ranges for hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) in young children, as HCC provides a summative measure of chronic stress unaffected by diurnal variations. Pilot data from the CANDLE Study indicated significantly higher HCC in black children compared to white children across ages 1 to 4 years, with differences potentially attributed to variations in hair lipid content based on racial background. Establishing age-, sex-, and race-specific normative levels for HCC was deemed essential for understanding the cumulative effects of chronic stress, which could aid in identifying, preventing, and treating maladaptive and toxic stress in children.
